The Snake Charmer is a short ethnographic documentary outlining the family history and magical roots of a group of nomadic Rajasthani snake charmers, or Madari, living in rural Gujarat, northwest India.

These scenes were shot in the summer of 2005 on the outskirts of the town of Dhrangadhra, Gujarat. The Madari live in tents on the edge of town, in an enclave known as Vadipara, or "snake charmers' alley." Despite the abolition of the caste system after the establishment of the Republic of India in 1947, the snake charmers remain on the fringes of Hindu society; they belong to the "Madari Varna", a sub-caste of the Untouchable caste.

This video was produced, directed, photographed, and edited by Alex Goldblum as part of coursework in the Visual Anthropology program of Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. The principal ethnographer on the project was Dr. Jayasinhji "Bapa" Jhala, a native-son of the Kingdom of Halvad-Dhrangadhra, in the modern Indian state of Gujarat.

India - Summer 2005

During the summer of 2005, I spent six weeks touring the north and northwest of India.

During my stay, I was a week and a half in New Delhi, with a day trip to Agra, four days in Mumbai (Bombay), three days in Mt. Abu, Rajasthan, and one month in the small town of Dhrangadhra, Gujarat, with two day trips to the regional capital at Ahmedabad.

The stated mission of the trip was to conduct ethnographic field research into the lives of nomadic snake charmers. Along the way, I met up with my principal informants, the Madari, who lived in tents on the outskirts of town. One of the men from the group, Saujinath, allowed me to follow him for the duration of the month.

At the end of the series, you will see a group of photos of theatre performers, the Tragada Bhavai. The Bhavai were the subject of my professor's research for many years. Dr. Jayasinhji "Bapa" Jhala was kind enough to open the doors of his palace, Ajitnivas Rajmahal in Dhrangadhra, to our study abroad group from Temple University. During my stay in India, I produced not only the documentary and these photographs, but I also performed in an "alternative third theatre" producton, partially of my own design, as well as published my daily journal, along with photos, here on this blog.

Hindustan, Bharata, India; call it what you will. These photos tell the story of my time in the great sub-continent of southeast Asia.

An interview with found object artist & dumpster diver Neil Benson on the importance of recycling to sustainable development. Neil Benson is a founding member of "The Dumpster Divers," a Philadelphia-based found object art collective. According to Temple University urban studies researcher Caesar Dechicchis: "Neil is an 'organic intellectual' as opposed to a 'traditional intellectual.' Photography is all about taking advantage of your environment, as is dumpster diving. Photography connects Phenomena with Audience, much like a theatre does for drama. For Neil, the whole world is a dumpster. By adopting the trash medium, Neil has retained his artistic grounding yet transitioned into an inverted commercial paradigm. What happens after an image looses its appeal? It becomes REFUSE: Disney drinking glasses, a cartoon lunch box from 1967, neon lights, typewriters, et al. The fodder for Neil’s creative work is the fleeting nature of modern society. Andy Warhol predicted that the television would provide every person with 15 minutes of fame and yet, a century earlier, to take one photograph would require 15 minutes of exposure. Products and images can become obsolete in the blink of an eye, like a frame on a movie roll. Thus his work is to weave together the forgotten and discarded artifacts of the information age." I shot this film when I was sixteen years old on an old 35mm PENTAX K-1000 camera with Kodak Tri-x and Plus-x Black & White film, plus a roll or two of color. I also printed a few of them myself in the darkroom; i chose to have the rest professionally printed by the now defunct photo supply store "The Photoshop" on Forbes Ave. in Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh, PA b/c I had so many negatives! (01:33:48) Alexg507: Things are out of control in the
Boston-Washington megalopolis. Philadelphia is erupting with gunfire
exchanges in regular intervals between police and petty drug dealers;
gang members, thugs, and thieves are working gross acts of violence.
Police helicopters are circling the skies above the city.
(02:33:56) Alexg507: This is not a joke nor some surrealist
hallucination, there's a DRUG WAR going on in the streets of North
Philly RIGHT THIS INSTANT and it's IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD. You don't have
to go to Oaxaca, Mexico to see a drug war, beheadings, and social
unrest. I'm overhearing gunshots very, very close, extremely close, a
little too close to my own front door. I'm a little overwhelmed with
anxiety; I'm not making this up (but I wish I was). This whole ghetto
thing is not cool anymore (but was it ever?) and I'm not lying when I
tell you that there is shots being fired in North Philly right this
instant.

The Pittsburgh Police racially profiled me while I was shooting a
movie with my cinematographer this weekend. We were shooting video of
a bridge near the Heinz Factory in the North Side for my senior thesis
video project, when the police witnessed us and started to tail us.
When we got to the Strip District on Penn Avenue the police caught our
trail. Now you've got to understand, my friend Dan and I look very
much like a couple of Middle Eastern guys; we're both JEWS though, not
ARABS. So we're in Peppi's Subs ordering a Philly Cheese Steak (w/o
the cheese) when all of a sudden four big police officers enter the
restaurant and say to us very sternly, "Excuse me, you two, can we
have a word with you outside, please?"
Apparently, according to the cops, my friend Dan and I looked like terrorists.

On September 11, 2001, America came under attack by terrorism on the
Island of Manhattan in New York City, on the Potomac River in
Washington, District of Columbia, and in Somerset County, in the
Western woods of Pennsylvania. It was an act of terrorism so heinous
and so foul, an attack that would threaten to destabilize the course
of democracy and security in the United States. Faced with a state of
heightened alert, ordinary citizens, as well as their governmental
counterparts, began to feel suspicious of their neighbors and those
who were perceived as "questionable." In the face of so much war,
genocide, and injustice, not just on 9/11 but also in ongoing
conflicts the world over, it's a wonder that daily life in America
still proceeds on, seemingly without a care in the world for the
hapless militarized state we find ourselves in.

terror alert level currently as of Election Day 2006, stands at
code-yellow, an elevated risk of a terror attack.
